ABOUT US

Tapas Institute of Scientific Research and Development (Tapas Institute) is a non-profit, non-government organization devoted to sustainable development of the rural and peri-urban communities in Nigeria.

HISTORY

Tapas institute was founded in 1997 as the Tapas Project with the mission of extending modern agricultural techniques and methods to rural dwellers, mobilization of graduates of agriculture and environmental studies towards making more meaningful impact in society. From its inception in 1997 to 2005 the Project was able to make meaningful impact in its mission areas especially through provision of literature to students of universities and colleges in Eastern Nigeria through its library development project, distribution of improved seedlings to rural farmers, seminars and lectures to students and farmers and other informal activities.

In June 2005, the Project was renamed Tapas Institute of Scientific Research and Development or Tapas Institute for short to accommodate the broader and renewed vision of the founders. In September 2005, the Institute began the publication of two quarterly peer-reviewed journals; International Journal of Natural and Applied Sciences (IJONAS) and Animal Production Research Advances (APRA). They has since appeared promptly in September and December 2005, and March 2006 and have received tremendous patronage from local and international researchers. Two other journals in the important areas of General Agriculture and Food Systems, and Health Sciences are also planned. These journals are established to serve as accessible media for publication of research results by developing countries scientists and dissemination of such research findings to the larger world.

MISSION
To contribute to scientific research and development in Nigeria, Africa and the world in order to improve technological ability and extend the benefits of modern science and technology to all people.

OBJECTIVES  

  • To undertake, participate and assist in the organization trainings and study courses, conferences, seminars and lectures
  • To undertake, aid, promote and co-ordinate research in its own facilities or through other agencies including universities, training centers, industries, government and non-government organizations in Nigeria and the world.
  • To establish centers of excellence for
      • Study and orientation
      • Training and instruction
      • Research and evaluation
      • Such others as may be necessary to achieve the objective of the Institute.
  • To analyze and propose solutions to specific problems encountered in the planning and implementation of various programs of the Institute and other programs referred to it.
  • To prepare, print and publish papers, periodicals and books in furtherance of the objectives of the institute.
  • To establish and maintain library and information services.
  • To collaborate with other institutions, associations and societies in Nigeria and abroad interested in similar objectives.
  • To assist different tiers of government in policy formulation and the choice of options
